New Zealand has 42 native species and subspecies of cicadas contained in 5 genera. The following 2 page contain pictures of Amphipsalta cingulata, one of the largest of the New Zealand species. This species of cicada is sometimes called the "clapping cicada".

The first page of photos shows the Cicada exoskeleton after the moult. They seem to come in a variety of colours but mainly a pinkish colour and a red/brown as shown by the first two photos. On Mt Maunganui where these photos were taken nearly all the exoskeletons were left on the south side of the trees they climbed.

The next two photos show the pincer like forelegs that the nymph possesses, when the nymph sheds this shell it has six legs and wings.

The photos also show the mouth stylets that the nymph uses to suck the juices out of the plant roots while they spend their time underground.

This image gives a good view of the two parts to the mouth stylets, one for pushing saliva down into the plant root the other to suck juice out.
